Barbells

A barbell is an exercise equipment used in weight training, weightlifting and power-lifting. It is a larger version of a dumbbell. It has a metal bar that is 5-7 feet long, the middle section has a diameter of 1 inch, on average, engraved with a knurled cross hatch pattern for good grip. Weight discs or plates are inserted onto each end of the bar and are stacked to the desired total weight. The discs are secured with collars/clips. There are three major kinds of barbells: Olympic, standard and EZ curl. An Olympic barbell has a bar in which the sleeves rotate that enables the discs to spin and eliminates rotational-inertia placed upon the lifter.

The Olympic bar for women is shorter than the men’s. Olympic plates are colour-coded according to weight. Standard plates have a central hole that is one inch wide. Standard barbells are one inch wide all the way along. Standard barbells typically weigh around 22 pounds. The EZ curl bar is a is often used for biceps curls and lying triceps extensions. Its zigzag grips allows for natural positioning of the wrists and forearms reducing injury.
